Does a knee brace decrease recurrent anterior cruciate ligament injuries?
Lim Bee-Oh

Abstract
Knee braces have been designed to improve functional sta-bility following anterior cruciate ligament injury(ACL). However, the efficacy and benefits of knee bracing are still controversial. Some studies have suggested that braces might be beneficial for ACL injured or reconstructed knees by improving their functional performance, preventing quadriceps inhibition, reducing anterior-posterior laxity, al-lowing protected motion and preventing excessive loading on an injured ACL or healing graft. However, in other studies no significant improvements in the function of the knees with bracing were found either for ACL-defi-cient(ACLD) or ACL-reconstructed(ACLR) patients. The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons believes that rehabilitative and functional knee braces can be effective in many treatment programs. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that functional braces may help prevent fur-ther injury to a previously injured knee. Their use is ac-cepted clinically on the basis of subjective performance. If used, knee braces should complement rehabilitative therapy and required surgery.
